![]() Of course, there are always happy accidents. This informative, new resource presents the first comprehensive treatment of silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors (SiGe HBTs). So, blah blah, I'd expect a circuit designed for Si to be more tolerant of taking a Ge than vice versa, but I'd also expect any such substitutions either way to change the sound and not necessarily in a good way. there was no such concept as "good distortion") you assumed Si transistors with plenty of current gain and low leakage, which don't really apply to Ge. When I learned about designing multi stage transistor amps (which had nothing to do with guitars, i.e. If the emitter goes straight to ground then that stage is operating at maximum gain, minimum negative feedback, and greatest sensitivity to the details of the transistor. This emitter resistor provides "negative feedback" which reduces the gain and also reduces the sensitivity of the circuit to the details of the transistor. One thing to look for is whether there is a resistor between the emitter and ground, in an amplifying stage where the output is taken from a load resistor between the voltage source and the collector. I'm also curious if I could just get my own germanium transistors into pedals, without other mods, or whether I'd have to do a lot of other tweaking (I'm not anywhere near that skill or knowledge wise yet, this is mostly a question for the potential custom build request). This is mainly a question I have because I was thinking about asking for a custom pedal, where the silicon transistors are replaced with germanium ones, but not sure how much of a headache that's going to be for the builder, or whether it would even sound good if they're just swapped out (this question is particularly for the fuzzrite as I want a germanium one and have a silicon one, but also applies to others, as I'm thinking about the same for a fuzz face). It also brought up the question whether germanium/silicon pedals also have different circuits built around them. I remember a JHS episode where Josh says that Silicon is just as good as Germanium if the circuit is built right for the transistor, and I think he meant by that, that you can make silicon sound like a germanium one if you tweak the circuit, but I'm not entirely sure. ![]() ![]() So I don't know much about circuits and pedals really. ![]()
